Yumi Chair III
FALL 2016 | 52"H x 46"W x 43"D
Made from ash and ash veneer. The Yumi Chair takes its name from the asymmetrical yumi bow which has been bent and laminated by Japanese craftsmen for millennia. Each component of the chair splays outwards in a layered composition of light and line.
Amongst my earlier work the Yumi Chair was the most unapologetically dramatic, as much an art piece as a chair, and received considerable media attention before I even graduated from school. It also contained conspicuous faults in its execution, craftsmanship, and consideration for the user experience. Standing alone it evoked a powerful reaction from viewers, but once occupied its presence was severely diminished by the bulk of the user. For the next iteration I envisioned a new chair with impeccable craftsmanship and large enough to envelope the user in its skeletal curvature.
